Each year, millions of women around the world experience perimenopause, a phase of life that can drastically impact physical and mental health, experiences in the workplace, and familial and social relationships.

All too often, this transition is shrouded in silence and even stigma. In fact, only 28 percent of women say they know what to expect in their perimenopause experience.

At Oura, we are committed to building a future where every woman feels holistically understood and supported in their health.

With Oura Ring, women can gain the in-depth information they need to understand their bodies. From tracking symptoms to evaluating changes in menstrual cycles, sleep, cardiovascular health, physical activity, and other behavioral aspects, Oura can help turn complex data into clear, actionable insights, and help women navigate and feel their best at every stage of their perimenopause journey.

Learn more in Oura’s 2024 Perimenopause Report, in which we looked at aggregate, de-identified data from more than 100,000 female Oura members for one year to better understand how perimenopause impacts their day-to-day functioning. Download the report here.

Perimenopause: A Time of Change

Perimenopause marks a significant life transition that most women will experience during the ages of 45 to 55 years old. The transition begins with perimenopause, the period before menopause when your body gradually produces less estrogen and cycles become irregular. This can occur as early as your mid-30s.

Perimenopause timeline | Oura Ring

The transition to menopause is characterized by a range of symptoms, caused by changing hormone levels. While everyone’s journey is unique, you may experience symptoms such as vaginal dryness, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, brain fog, weight gain, joint pain, or a racing heart, as well as changes in body image and sexual health.

Some women may be able to reduce the impact of these symptoms through lifestyle changes, such as physical activity or meditation and mindfulness practices. Others may find symptom relief with hormonal interventions. However, in order to address any symptoms, it’s important to first recognize the signs of perimenopause and, in many cases, consult a medical professional.

How Oura Can Support You Through Perimenopause and Menopause

Oura provides a valuable tool to validate your intuition that you are going through physiological changes, giving you detailed data to inform your decisions.

To help you make the connection between various symptoms and how they show up in your body’s biometric data, try these Oura features, which can also help you feel prepared and empowered during conversations with healthcare providers.

1. Track Your Symptoms with New Perimenopause Tags

In addition to existing tags and custom tags, Oura has added 17 new tags specific to this transition to help you track symptoms and interventions, including hot flashes, mood swings, and HRT.

Once you start using tags regularly, you’ll start noticing interesting and informative patterns and correlations in the Trends view.

Member Tip: Now, when you regularly tag habits or symptoms, you may receive a personal Discovery, which provides insights into how your behaviors impact your data. For instance, you may learn that when you meditate before bed, you spend more time in deep sleep.

2. Share Your Cycle Insights Report

When you opt into Oura’s Cycle Insights feature, you’ll be able to download a six-month report of their Cycle Insights data. This report includes cycle length, period length, temperature variation, cycle phases, and symptom tags.

So rather than simply telling your doctor you’ve been experiencing mood swings, hot flashes, or irregular periods, you can show them exactly what’s going on and how long it’s been going on.

This data can give you the confidence to discuss symptoms with healthcare providers, and work together to come up with a plan to manage your symptoms, such as lifestyle changes, medication like hormone replacement therapy, or supplements.

Member Story: Saša M., 45, used Oura’s Cycle Insights to notice that her cycle was becoming longer and more irregular. With her doctor’s guidance, she realized she was in perimenopause and was able to come up with a plan to manage symptoms. “Having access to this information about my body makes me feel empowered,” she says.

3. Learn More About Your Sleep Patterns

Research suggests that up to 47% of women experience sleep disturbances during perimenopause, while up to 60% do so in menopause.

Oura’s detailed sleep insights provide an in-depth analysis of your sleep quality—such as how much time you spent in deep sleep or how long it took you to fall asleep. Plus, the Trends view allows you to understand how these variables have changed over time.

4. Understand Your Stress and Resilience Levels

Many women report experiencing greater levels of stress and a reduced ability to cope during perimenopause.

Oura provides several ways to track your stress levels, including Daytime Stress, heart rate variability (HRV), and Resilience, which estimates your ability to withstand physiological stress and recover from it over time.

These insights allow you to monitor your mental well-being and emotional fluctuations. By regularly checking your stats, you can ensure that you are prioritizing self-care, recognizing patterns in your stress response, and taking steps to encourage rest and balance during this phase.
