Oura’s mission is to give every body a voice.

“At Oura, we come to work every day inspired to build the best features to support women across all life phases,” says Dr. Chris Curry, Oura’s Clinical Director for Women’s Health. “We want to show up for women when they are feeling well, and when they are trying to optimize their sleep or build better activity habits. We want to provide guidance and support when things are hard, and when sleep and stress are making every day a challenge. We want to be with our members through the joys of pregnancy and the changes that accompany midlife.”

“At Oura, we are here for the good and bad, the easy and hard of women’s health.”

A Global View of Women’s Healthcare

Did you know that women and people with menstrual cycles have historically been left out of healthcare research? It wasn’t until 1993 that Congress wrote into law that women and minorities must be included in all clinical research studies.

Despite making up 51% of the world’s population, only 5% of global research and development (R&D) funding is allocated to study conditions that specifically or disproportionately affect women’s health. For example, migraines affect 12% of the world population and 75% of migraine patients are women, yet NIH funding for headaches historically accounts for less than 0.05% of the total NIH budget. Women also typically live longer than men, but spend more years in poor health.

This lack of investment and prioritization has created a significant knowledge gap with alarming implications, such as long diagnosis timelines, overprescribing of medication, and misdiagnosing of serious health issues in women.

There are significant consequences of disparities in research.

  • It can take up to 10 years to diagnose endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, often on ovaries, fallopian tubes, or pelvic tissues, causing inflammation, scarring, and severe pain that worsens during menstruation.
  • Women are twice as likely as men to experience adverse events from medications that they take.
  • Women also have worse outcomes after heart attacks. Within a year of a first heart attack, survival rates are lower in women than in men—even after accounting for age. Within five years of a first heart attack, 47% of women will die, develop heart failure, or have a stroke, compared with 36% of the men.

What’s more, many women aren’t getting the help they need at the doctor’s office. In a 2023 poll of 4,500 women, 77% of women reported that they felt they were the only advocate for their health and well-being.

Why? A majority (57%) report they’ve “been dismissed or misdiagnosed by medical professionals,” and 59% said that they have seen doctors “who do not believe me, or who have ignored my needs.”

Member Tip: Oura’s Shareable Report feature allows you to manage their health data and share it securely and safely with trusted healthcare professionals. If you’ve opted into Cycle Insights, you can download a report that includes your cycle length, period length, temperature variation, cycle phases, and symptom tags for the last six months.

Oura’s Women’s Health Initiatives

Women’s health encompasses not only reproductive health—but also a holistic approach to women’s overall well-being, no matter their stage of life.

“Oura can be a critical partner in body literacy for women as they navigate their own health journey, whatever that may be,” Dr. Gotlieb says.

Women also often experience dual roles as caregivers for family members as well as themselves. “As women, caring for ourselves first allows us to better take care of others,” Shelton notes. “Oura’s role is to give women the permission, knowledge, and tools to take care of their bodies.”

Some of Our Women’s Health Features—So Far

In fall 2022, Oura launched our initial women’s health feature, Period Prediction, which used key biosignals to provide a five-day prediction window for the start of your next cycle and period onset.

In fall 2023, we released Cycle Insights, offering a more detailed way to track your menstrual cycle, learn more about each stage, and accurately predict menstruation based on temperature trends, not just a calendar. We are constantly updating and improving our algorithms, with the most recent update in fall of 2025, adding improved performance for those with irregular cycles.

In fall 2024, we introduced the Fertile Window feature, which uses two algorithms to predict and detect your most fertile days and ovulation based on your past cycles and physiological data, including heart rate, heart rate variability, temperature trends, and respiratory rate.

In August 2025, we launched an updated Pregnancy Insights experience, which supports women throughout their pregnancy with guidance, education, and insights into biometrics across key vital signs. Oura is a leader in pregnancy research, and we have included research findings directly in the products we bring to women.

Research & Validation

Our science team is continuing to invest in research across the full span of reproductive life stages.
