Which devices is the Oura ring compatible with?
The Oura ring is compatible with most mobile devices that run iOS 11.0 or later, or Android 6.0 or later. An up-to-date list of tested devices can be found here.
How does Oura measure my heart rate?
Oura measures your resting heart rate during sleep and rest by detecting changes in your Blood Pulse Volume (PPG). The measurements are done from the arteries on the palm side of your finger using two infrared LEDs.
Does Oura track my heart rate during exercise?
No, Oura doesn’t track heart rate during exercise or other activities. The ring tracks your resting heart rate while you sleep, and during restful moments during the day.
Can I wear the ring at the gym?
You can, but to protect your finger and your ring, we don’t recommend it. Like regular jewelry, Oura can scratch if worn while lifting weights or gripping bars, or when scraping against metal, ceramics or stone.
How does Oura track my heart rate variability?
Oura tracks your heart rate variability (HRV) while you sleep, and during restful moments during the day. It calculates your HRV from the rMSSD, a well-known HRV parameter that provides a good view on your Autonomic Nervous System activity.
On-demand resting heart rate and heart rate variability tracking for rest and breathing exercises is planned to be released in early 2019.
How does Oura measure my body temperature?
Oura registers your body temperature reading every minute while you sleep. The Oura app doesn’t show absolute temperature values in Fahrenheit or Celsius, instead it shows how your body temperature changes around your own personal baseline over days, weeks and months.
Can I put the Oura ring in airplane mode?
Yes, if you prefer to keep Bluetooth off completely, you can enable ring airplane mode to cut all radio transmission from the ring.
Oura uses Bluetooth to sync your ring’s data with the app and to send notifications, but it doesn’t need to be connected to your phone to collect data. The ring can store data for up to 6 weeks. Just take your ring out of airplane mode and it will begin syncing all your stored data.
The Oura ring and EMF
The Oura ring is a Bluetooth Smart class 2 device. Bluetooth is only active on the ring for short periods of time, well below 1% of the day. Data is transmitted more continuously when the ring syncs with the app, and during firmware updates. Additionally, the Bluetooth signal and advertising are turned off when you’re inactive or sleeping.
The limit for SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) for a device such as the Oura ring is 2.0 W/kg for head and body. The Oura ring’s SAR level is 0.0003 W/kg. Learn more.
